When I first saw the trailer by chance, I thought this will just be another Hongkong rom-com. Though, of course I still wanna check it out (I love Hongkong movies and I love rom-com, enough reasons). To cut a long story short, I didn’t manage to watch it in the cinema due to the busy schedule. And I kind of forget about this movie until I talked to a newly introduced Chinese film journalist in one of my friend’s party. He was undergoing three months fellowship in Singapore and we talked about Chinese/Hongkong movies released in Singapore recently. And he mentioned this movie and commented that this movie actually turned out to be quite good and exceeded his expectation. His comment made me start hunting this movie again and I just cannot wait for the DVD to be released.
This movie tells a modern love story, which of course inevitably involves Facebook and flirtatious text messaging. Nice chemistry between Miriam Yeung and Shawn Yue. This is possibly Miriam Yeung’s best movie so far (she played in many rom-com before this, but at least this one is memorable and contains more substance).
Both the English and the Chinese title effectively portrays the story of this movie. “Love in a Puff” relates to the love story between smokers, which starts in the lunch-break smoking sessions. “Chi Ming yu Chun Giu” (志明與春嬌 ) is actually a commonly used term in Taiwan to refer to ordinary people. And both Miriam Yeung and Shawn Yue characters are indeed the girl and boy next door. People can easily relate to their love story as well. For example, we can totally understand why Shawn Yue freaked out when Miriam Yeung suddenly want to switch her mobile provider after only one day of dating.
There are some other interesting scenes. I think the opening is very effective and attention grabing (I even ask myself whether I put the correct DVD). I love the witty dialogue, which of course is to be enjoyed best in its original Cantonese language. I love the Facebook profile fraud sub-plot. Even though I still don’t understand why the hell they have the American Beauty’s flying plastic bag scene, but I really love that particular scene. I think the cinematography (throughout the movie, but especially in the flying plastic bag scene) is very artistic, especially the color. The “i n 55!W !” sms and smoking in the cup are very creative as well.
I just dyed my hair red the day before I watch this movie. If only I watch this movie one day earlier, I will most likely dye my hair purple instead.
